Hawkers, Peddlars, Cheap Jacks, Market Traders and Street Traders

Hawkers and peddlars are petty traders who carry the products on a bicycle or hand cart or on their heads and move from place to place selling their producs at the doorstep of the customers.

Hawkers use vehicle to carry the goods whereas peddlars carry them on their heads.

Cheap jacks are petty retailers having independent shops of a temporary nature in a business locality dealing in consumer items.

Market traders are small traders who open their  shops at different places on fixed dates such as every Saturday or alternate Sundays etc.

Street traders or pavement vendors are small retailers who open their shops in busy street corners or pavements near railway stations, bus stands etc. to sell their consumer items of common use.

ASSESSMENT
INRODUCTORY ACTIVITY

After the usual classroom practices teacher introduces the topic as we all very familiar with variety of salesmen in our daily life.
Can you give some examples?




Very good. You have pointed out that some sellers deal with large scale and others deal with small quantities but variety of goods. The first category we call it as wholesalers and the later one we call it as retailers.
Now we discuss about the classification of Retailers.


DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY

General Discussion
Teacher ask the students to discuss about the pictures given to them and classify according to their own choice and paste in to a chart. Given pictures are of different types of retailers like hawkers, pedlars, street vendors, second hand goods shops, speciality shops, general shops and street stall holders etc.

Teacher also participated and gave proper support to the discussion. Students may be classified as some of them as selling in the fixed shop and others have no such shop.
Teacher concluded the activity with a brief explanation about fixed shop retailers and itinerant retailers.

Activity II Group Discussion

Teacher divided the whole class into five groups and provided handouts to each group. And she also asked the students to discuss about the matter in the Activity cards.

Activity Card 1

Arun’s mother bought vegetables from a seller on the door step.
Can you imagine the vehicle of the seller?
Nature of the product he dealt with?
Suggest other things sells through this way?
How he priced the product?

Activity Card 2

Meenu get into the bus from the bus stand. She met sellers of magazines, ginger chocolates etc.
How these sellers carry their product?
What are the other things carried by these types of sellers?
At where other places we can see these sellers?
In such cases you got many choices?

Activity Card 3

As a part of Thrissur Pooram there organize an exhibition.
Like-wise at the time of Vishu and Onam there should arrange onam bazaar, pattaz shops etc.
Can you point out the features of these type of shops?
Is there any choice for customers?
All the stalls should exist for long period?
How they priced for their products? Is there any bargaining takesplace?
What are the products they deal with?

We see in the Sakthan Market there are different types of sellers on the street.
Which types of sellers are there?
Where they sell their product?
All these products high priced or not?

Selvam who sells ice-cream on his bicycle. He is a travelling vendor to the places of crowd.
Can you point out the quality of the product he deals with?
Mention some other products sell through this way.
 Predict the prices of these products.

Reena goes to the Sunday market in Pondicherry to sell her goods on Sunday and she goes to Pollachi on Wednesday.

On which day the Pollachi market open?
Is Reena’s place of business is fixed?
On which day Reena sell her goods in Pondicherry?
Can you give the market day in your locality?

All the students actively participated in the discussion. Teacher also participated and cleared all the doubts raised by them.

CONCLUDING ACTIVITY

Teacher concluded the activities with the help of a PPT slides related to the summary of itinerant retailers and ask some review questions:

1.     List some hawkers?
2.     What are the features of cheap jacks?
3.     How can you differentiate a peddlar from a hawker?
4.     Who opens their business on busy street?
5.     Market traders have only one day business in a week. Do you agree? Justify your reason.

FOLLOW- UP ACTIVITY

In order to strengthen the acquired knowledge teacher asked the students to prepare a picture album of different types of retailers.





Door to door sellers, some others sell things through walking, others on streets, some others sell on large volume and others deals only on small scale etc.
